7 Aug 2025 - Arrived at Stop #25 Frankfort KY

This morning at 1003 hrs we pulled chocks at Camp Atterbury and headed southbound on I-65 towards Louisville KY.  It was clear sailing although the traffic was pretty heavy.  Just north of Louisville we bypassed to the east on I-265.  We crossed the Ohio River on the Lewis and Clark Bridge and missed getting a picture of the "Welcome to Kentucky" sign, but we did get a picture of this magnificent bridge!
A few more miles and we headed eastbound on I-64 to Frankfort.  This is the first campground we have received a request to text when we got off the interstate so they could be ready for us to expedite our reception.

At 1255 hrs we rolled into the Elkhorn RV Park, our home for the next six nights.  Today's drive was a modest 143 miles which was welcome!  We checked in quickly and were escorted to our site, which is a riverfront back-in site bordering the South Elkhorn Creek.

The shade is welcome but the trees render Directv a no-go here.  That's OK as they have several hundred channels of campground cable plus we can stream via all sorts of sources.  As I write this I am streaming the very late Indiana Fever vs the Phoenix Mercury WNBA game on Amazon Prime Video via Apple TV. Eastern time zone is brutal on the games played near the west coast!  AT&T coverage is good here so my hotspot is providing us good Internet.  I have not tried the campground WiFi but it is usually only good for checking email, not streaming.

We are here from 7-13 August which is six nights.  So why six nights in Frankfort KY?  Well, this is beautiful country, in the heart of the Kentucky bourbon trail.  There are many well know distilleries near here and when I laid this trip out we had time to "kill". Frankfort is also the capital of Kentucky, so there are many things to see here.  This is our third visit to Frankfort but the first time we've had plenty of time to see the sights.  I worked the reservation dates backwards from our stay at Ft Jackson for our grandson's basic training graduation.

So we got all settled in and then we headed back to the campground office to talk with staff about what to see and do in the area.  Again, not our first rodeo in the area, but always nice to talk with the locals.  We spent some time working on a schedule for the things we want to see and identified those for tomorrow.  We want to stop at Buffalo Trace gift shop first thing tomorrow to see what allocated bourbons are being offered, and then we will visit the Mattingly 1845 distillery just a few blocks away.

We have tours arranged at Four Roses Distillery on Saturday and the Woodford Reserve Distillery on Monday.  There is supposed to be a nice military history museum in Frankfort plus the state capitol building.  Other things on our list that we have not seen of our previous stops here include the Castle and Key Distillery, the Rebecca Ruth Candy Museum, Daniel Boone's grave, and possibly a boat tour.  and the Wild Turkey Distillery.  In between all that we will investigate the local food establishments too, and enjoy some grilling and our great view along the South Elkhorn Creek.
