This morning at 0930 hrs we waved goodbye to Ft Jackson and headed east towards Myrtle Beach. Later start today by design as the travel distance was only 120 miles and check-in was 1300 hrs. We took our time and stopped once in an IGA parking lot to stretch and Doreen went in with her grocery list and fulfilled it. As we continued east we passed Shaw Air Force Base. Back in December 1973 I was in the last week of my radio maintenance technical training school at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi MS. I had not yet received my follow-on assignment so with the help of my First Sergeant I was directed to the Consolidated Base Personnel Office (CBPO) and I made my predicament known. Back then we all had submitted a "dream sheet" that listed our first, second and third choices for assignments. I don't think they looked at it at all, and offered me Loring Air Force Base in Limestone Maine, or Shaw Air Force Base here in South Carolina. The Shaw assignment would have been with a Mobile Communications unit and I would have been gone regularly for extended temporary duty assignments, hence the "mobile" communications. So I called my fiancé Doreen and asked her if she liked lobster! And the rest is history. We spent the next three years in the frozen tundra of Aroostook County Maine as newlyweds, learning how to love each other and starting our family with daughter Michelle born up there!!
We continued east towards the coast and noticed bush crops in the fields and assumed they were likely peanut crops. Before we leave the area I would like to land some boiled peanuts. I like the chipotle flavored ones.
At 1225 hrs we arrived at Crooked Oaks RV Park in Conway SC. They checked us in quickly and escorted us to our site. This is a fairly new park, maybe just a year or so old. The 170 sites are all paved, level and wide plus they are full hookup, 50 amp of course with 100+ channels of cable TV. The RV park roads are also all blacktopped and the entire place in manicured.RV park office
Nicely spaced sites
We got all settled in and then headed down to the swimming pool area. We were the only ones there. We assume this will change as families show up tomorrow for the Labor Day weekend. In addition to the water features they also have a pickle ball court, an activities room for crafts, bingo, etc, and they have bags boards, and various other games available.
Adult pool - naturally warmed water
Infant pool just a few inches deep
Splash Pad
We went back to the coach and then returned and swam for a while. It was very refreshing, and we had the place to ourselves.
We will head downtown tomorrow and visit the boardwalk and pier. Later we have made plans to get together with our Alliance friends Michael and Donna Pizzi for dinner. We are here until Tuesday 2 Sep so we have plenty of time to see the area.
As I write this we were notified by Jennifer that PFC Lucas arrived at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio TX and will start his training next week! And his adventure continues!
